Now that you just got yourself one of the best smartphones around the Samsung Galaxy SIII it is time to start installing apps on it. Galaxy S III already comes pre-installed with apps like. Google Search, Maps, Navigator, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Picasa integration, Swype, Dropbox etc. Here I have jotted down some more essential free apps for Galaxy SIII to get the most out of your phone. Though this list is focused on S3 most of these apps are good for any android device.

1. Antivirus free
Your smartphone probably contains more sensitive data then your computer and it is only logical that you want to install a good antivirus. I have been using AVG on my PC for years now and it is one of the best out there and even more so it is free. The mobile app works brilliantly and you can just install and forget though you should also check out the tools this app packs along with the standard scanning.

2. Firefox / Chrome
There are a lot of web browsers available for android devices with dolphin possibly being the most used one. But Firefox and Chrome work just as good with the added benefit of being able to sync your browsing history and bookmarks with your other devices.

3. Tiny Flashlight + Led
A flashlight is always handy to have this app also supports multiple modes like Morse code, warning lights etc. Watch out for your battery though while using the bright light.

4. Flipboard
Flipboard collects the content of social media (your twitter and facebook feeds) and other websites and presents it in magazine format and allows to “flip” through feeds from 100’s of partner websites in one place.

5. GTasks
When it comes to a task lists there are a lot of very extensive software available like Evernote and remember the milk. But for most uses a simple task list with reminders is all that we need. This app does exactly that, it links to your Tasks list in Gmail and lets you monitor it on the mobile phone. This also comes with a handy widget.

6. Polaris Office
From their website
“Polaris® Office is the easiest and strongest office products designed for mobile devices. Anytime, anywhere, you can easily use various kinds of documents such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, with only several tabs, and organize your data fast and do your presentation excellently.”
(This app is found from the Samsung Apps and is not available on Google Play store)

7. S Baro
Your S3 comes with an inbuilt barometer! This app from the Samsung app store lets you see the atmospheric pressure and also tells you your altitude based on the air pressure measured and the air pressure of your GPS location fetched from the internet. (This app is found from the Samsung Apps and is not available on Google Play store)

For the traveler in you. The skyscanner app lets you search for flight tickets over various websites and flight companies including searching for low cost airlines and multiple airline tickets. All this comes with a handy and easy to use UI.

9. Skype
Skype for your Android to make video calls and cheap phone calls.

10. Wikipedia & IMDB
What is a smart phone without being able to quickly look up information on Wikipedia! Also installing IMDB if you are a movie buff is a good idea.

11. WhatsApp
It is a smartphone messenger which lets you chat with your friends and send pictures over the internet for free. Since this works with your phone number all your friends using this application from your phonebook are already added and you can start chatting with them directly.

12. Instagram
This is a photo enhancement app that requires only a couple of touches to produce retro-looking images and then share them with friends and other Instagram members. It is great if you like to share photos this app realy can transform them into good looking shots.

Have fun installing the apps and playing with your mobile phone and watch out for the Jelly bean update coming on 29th August!
